Counselor Corner SP® Celebrates Black History Month!

Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in February[1][2] and the United Kingdom in October.[3]

The remembrance began in 1926, with the announcement of “Negro History Week” by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, a group of which he was co-founder. Woodson chose the second week of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social condition of African Americans: former President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass.[1]

Counselor Corner SP®: Psychopharmacology

Tres Mali Scott on Counselor Corner SP®

The branch of psychology concerned with the affects and effects of drugs on the mind and behavior. Psychopharmacology  comes from the Greek word “psykhe”, meaning breath, life, or soul and “pharmakon” meaning drug. is the scientific study of the actions of drugs and their effects on mood, sensation, thinking, and behavior. It is distinguished from neuropsychopharmacology, which emphasizes drug-induced changes in the functioning of cells in the nervous system (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopharmacology).[1]

Counselors, Therapist, Psychologist, and Psychiatrist are familiar with prescription drugs. The law requires main and side effects posted and printed for all to read. Street drugs given by the illegal “street pharmacist” are not labeled and a general understanding of the effects on the mind and behavior is recommended. This reduces:
  • Health risks,
  • Drug interaction complications,
  • Misdiagnosis, and
  • Increases the administration of the correct prescriptions.

This is New—-Lower Dose Medications!!!!!!!

The new lower dose of adult medications give hope to:

  •  Less increase in tolerance with longer use time,
  • Reduced side effects, and
  • Less addictive effects.

An example of this new lower dose for adult medications include the 81 milligram Asprin. In the past the lowest dose was 200 milligrams.

As caregivers, whether Parent, Counselor, Therapist, Psychologist, or Psychiatrist, education on a subject increases success and decreases mistakes.

For all of our “Good Health”, remember:

  1. Know the side and main effects of the medications.
  2. Tell the Doctor all your medications, even over-the-counter, homopathetic, and flower remedies.
  3. Report how the medications are effecting you for the best care.

Counselor Corner SP®: Video Games & Violence–Do You Know What Video Games Your Child Is Playing?

Do you know what video game your child is playing?…by Tres Mali Scott

The Law is to protect, but as a parent or caregiver, the law is not the only protector of children and venerable populations. Video games are at the front of our attention. Most adults have not paid any attention to what the video game is really saying or doing. Any behavior repeated for a long period of time effects judgment. Repeated exsposure to violence effects behavioral judgement. Like TV & Movie Rating, video games are a form of entertainment that requires monitoring.

Do you know what video games your child is playing?

November 03, 2010|By David G. Savage, Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Washington — The Supreme Court debated sex, violence and free speech Tuesday, as several justices strongly argued for breaking new ground and upholding a California law that would forbid the sale of violent video games to those under age 18.

Counselor Corner SP®: New Theories for the Next Generation–20-10-20 Processing Curricula

Wikipedia.org–20-10-20 Processing Curricula Development Program by Tres Mali Scott

From: Wikipedia.org 20-10-20 Processing Curricula, a Curriculum Development Program

The 20-10-20 Curricula Problem:

Students that are a part of the mainstream “student body” may have mild forms of psychopathological disorders that will not be diagnosed or formally treated, and effects achievement and functioning. Understanding the non-psychopathological issues improve curricula development, test construction, lesson plan development, improve social training, and increase participation of students in extracurricular activities.

Some non-psychopathological presentations of symptoms are a result of the changes in society, increases in technology, and increased access to information.

The Scott 20-10-20 Processing Curricula Development Plan for Lesson Planning 2010 & Beyond is based on the majority of the populations increase in mental processing speed. An example is typing speed verses writing speed. Typing speed is faster than writing speed. When a person is comprehending what is being typed, the more words typed per minute shows an increase in mental processing. Data inputting is not considered because it does not require reading or understanding what is inputted.

Computer use, video games, and movies that replace reading a book have contributed to an increase in mental processing speed. School curricula must match the current mental processing of children.

I predict that more children will present as ADD or ADD w/Hyperactivity. It is not ADD or ADD w/Hyperactivity, it is a generation or two of children with a processing speed and learning processing that is not matched by the current school system curricula…
